4 Year Old Program

At Templestowe Heights Pre-School we base our curriculum on the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework for Australia. This curriculum embraces the development of the framework and its five learning outcomes:

  • Children have a strong sense of identity

  • Children are connected with and contribute to their world

  • Children have a strong sense of well being

  • Children are confident and involved learners

  • Children are effective communicators

The outcomes acknowledge that children learn in a variety of ways and vary in their capabilities and pace of learning.

The staff plan individually and for the group as a whole. The children’s interests and abilities guide us with this planning, they have a real and significant role over what direction the planning will go. The staff understand that children learn through play and we offer many engaging and changing play spaces both inside and out to cater for this learning. These play spaces offer the children the chance to discover, create, improvise and imagine. We also want the play to assist the children to question and of course solve problems as well.

Alongside this open ended creative learning through play is also the Intentional teaching that takes place on a day to day basis. Intentional teaching is deliberate, purposeful and thoughtful.

As we look around the kindergarten the children's play gives the staff so many opportunities to use strategies such as modelling, demonstrating, explaining and using many resources that are around us i.e. books, posters, music stories etc.to extend the children’s thinking and learning.

The staff use reflective learning journals, individual portfolios, program plans and newsletters and Committee reports to assist the parents to understand what we are doing on a day to day basis and why we are doing it and are encouraged them to take a real part in the program itself.
